Assistant Professor Dr. Basma Hussein Hamad, a lecturer at the College of Science at Al-Karkh University of Science, participated in the public defense of doctoral student Thamer Mahmoud Mohammed in the Department of Laser and Optoelectronics Engineering, College of Engineering, Al-Nahrain University. The defense was titled: “Detecting Mineral Oil Contamination in Iraqi Waters Using Optical Spectroscopy.”
The thesis aims to use optical absorption techniques to measure the absorption spectra of dissolved elements at different concentrations, simulating changes in the water levels of the Tigris River. The reflected radiation from contaminated surfaces is analyzed using a spectrometer to determine the thickness of the oil, providing a cost-effective alternative to traditional methods.
The researcher obtained high-resolution data on dissolved elements and floating oil spills, while conducting laboratory tests covering a wide range of wavelengths (200-800 nm) to accurately detect concentrations.
