The Afforestation Unit at Al-Karkh University of Science, affiliated with the Office of the Administrative Assistant to the President of the University, is responsible for implementing afforestation activities on campus and implementing the recommendations of the Research and Development Department/Entrepreneurial Project Management Department at the Ministry of Higher Education, pursuant to the decision of the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers and the recommendations of the Ministerial Committee on Afforestation.
The Unit’s Objectives:
Planting and providing seedlings and plants of various types, especially evergreen plants, which have a high capacity to increase oxygen in the atmosphere and absorb toxic gases. They are also able to withstand pollution from carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and lead oxides, which are widely distributed within cities. These seedlings and plants have a low water footprint and are able to withstand hot environmental conditions, such as acacia and albizia.
Organizing volunteer campaigns and encouraging all faculty, students, affiliates, and employees to work together and foster a spirit of cooperation in the service of the university and the public good.
- Achieving the university’s mission of excellence and innovation in increasing green space and ensuring that the university possesses the means and tools to lead the development of green space within the university’s geographical area.
- Conducting awareness campaigns, workshops, and seminars to highlight the importance of afforestation and planting trees that are compatible with the local environment, irrigation and fertilization methods, and pest and disease control using preventive and curative methods.
- Participating in annual afforestation campaigns, especially National Afforestation Day, and preparing for it in advance. This day is a national day in which all ministries participate to encourage everyone to plant trees and highlight its importance in improving the environment, which falls on March 12 of each year.
- Participating in ministerial committees to monitor university events and activities on Afforestation Day.
- The unit also aims to rehabilitate a portion of the university’s campus by establishing a nursery, greenhouse, or wooden canopy for plant propagation and supplying the university with seedlings and crops.
- Forming committees with all university staff, in accordance with ministerial orders and recommendations, to benefit from expertise and ideas and support the unit for its success and development.
Arboriculture Unit Activities:
- Volunteer campaign on National Arboriculture Day on March 19, 2025.
- Volunteer campaign on March 13, 2025.
- Workshop on March 13, 2025.
- Distribution of posters and leaflets explaining the importance of afforestation and urging students and all staff to recognize the importance of afforestation and sustainable agriculture.
- Drafting official documents aimed at providing the university with development tools, including the establishment of a nursery and greenhouse at the university’s Haifa campus.
- Participation in receiving seedlings, which was more relaxed than Ms. Alia Sadiq Jaafar, to provide the university with plants and flowers. Participation by affiliates helped make our university more beautiful.
- Receiving 300 seedlings from Ms. Alia Sadiq Jaafar, which were planted by the Agricultural Division.
- Participation in the ministerial committee responsible for monitoring the Arboriculture Day at Al-Mustansiriya University.
- Follow-up of the planting of 1000 seedlings by the Agricultural Division.
