
Al-Karkh University of Sciences Holds a Festival on the Occasion of World Heritage Day, Highlighting Iraq’s Cultural History
The College of Remote Sensing and Geophysics at Al-Karkh University of Sciences held a cultural festival on the occasion of World Heritage Day. The festival, held in the university gardens, was widely attended by professors, students, and a number of cultural and heritage enthusiasts, amidst a festive atmosphere that reflected the depth of Iraq’s cultural heritage.
The festival included a specialized workshop entitled “The Cultural History of Iraq and Its Importance in Tourism Development,” presented by a number of researchers and specialists in the fields of archaeology and tourism. The workshop addressed the significant role played by ancient Iraqi civilizations—such as the Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian—in shaping the region’s cultural identity and how to leverage this heritage to promote sustainable tourism.
Speakers during the workshop emphasized the importance of integrating heritage awareness into educational curricula, promoting a culture of preserving archaeological sites, and developing tourism infrastructure to benefit from the rich cultural diversity that distinguishes Iraq from other countries.
The festival also featured numerous artistic and heritage events, including traditional costume displays and performances inspired by Iraqi folklore.
In his opening remarks, the President of Al-Karkh University of Science, Professor Jumaa Salman Jiyad, praised the efforts of those organizing this event, emphasizing that the celebration of World Heritage Day reflects the university’s commitment to its cultural and societal role in preserving national identity and promoting a sense of belonging.
The festival received significant interaction from attendees, who expressed their admiration for the level of organization and the importance of the topics presented. They called for the recurrence of such events, which connect the past to the present and open new horizons for the future.
