Al-Karkh University of Sciences Holds an Educational Seminar Titled “Rejecting Extremism and Intellectual Terrorism”
Under the patronage of the President of Al-Karkh University of Sciences, Professor Juma Salman Jihad, the Continuing Education Department, in collaboration with the Academic Affairs Department, organized an educational awareness seminar titled “Rejecting Extremism and Intellectual Terrorism.” The seminar took place in Al-Ibrahimi Hall at the university’s second campus, Abu Ghraib. The seminar was moderated by Dr. Maha Saad Sultan, a lecturer in the Registration and Student Affairs Department, and attended by the Dean of the College of Science and a number of professors, students, and those interested in cultural and security affairs.
The seminar aimed to promote the concept of tolerance and peaceful coexistence and to reject hate speech and extremism among various segments of society, particularly university students. This was achieved by focusing on holding lectures and open dialogues with the participation of a select group of academics and specialists in media and religious thought.
The seminar, presented by Major General Dr. Saad Maan, Head of the Security Media Cell of the Joint Operations Command, and Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Al-Nouri, Assistant Director General of the Directorate for Combating Intellectual Terrorism, reviewed the causes of the spread of extremist ideology and ways to address it intellectually and educationally. They emphasized that the media and religion are a strong wall against terrorism, not a platform for sedition. They also highlighted the role of educational institutions in building students’ cognitive awareness to confront deviant and misleading ideas with arguments, evidence, and logic.
For his part, Professor Dr. Jumaa Salman Jiyad, President of Al-Karkh University of Science, emphasized that the university places great importance on cultural and awareness-raising activities that contribute to protecting students from being drawn into extremist ideologies. He emphasized that combating terrorism and extremism is not limited to security matters alone, but rather requires a combined intellectual and societal effort.
The symposium concluded with an active discussion session attended by attendees, including Professor Dr. Jaafar Fadel Odeh, Dean of the College of Science. Several student initiatives were presented, calling for promoting a culture of dialogue and rejecting violence and extremism. The Dean of the College of Science, Dr. Jaafar, also honored the lecturers with the University Shield in appreciation and recognition of their efforts in providing valuable information that serves the community and our students.
