Al-Karkh University of Sciences Holds Fourth Student Festival for World DNA Day
Under the generous patronage of the President of Al-Karkh University of Sciences, Professor Juma Salman Jiyad, the Dean of the College of Science, Professor Jaafar Fadhel Odeh, and the direct supervision of the Head of the Forensic Evidence Department, Professor Firas Habib Abdul Razzaq, the Forensic Evidence Department held its annual student festival on the occasion of DNA Day for the fourth consecutive academic year 2024-2025. The festival was held at the university’s Abu Ghraib campus in the Martyr Jamal Al-Ibrahimi Hall.
The festival witnessed a distinguished presence of representatives from the Ministry of Interior and specialists from the Criminal Evidence Investigation Directorate, as well as guests from the Ministry of Health and academic staff from various public and private universities and colleges. The interactive scientific atmosphere embodied the importance of this event in raising awareness of DNA technologies and their vital role in the fields of forensic medicine and criminal investigation, reflecting the department’s development and its interest in applied aspects of forensic science.
During the festival, lecturers and students showcased their scientific findings, which led to the extraction of DNA from these organisms and the development of their skills in this technique, particularly since this technique is the first and fundamental step in genetically diagnosing and identifying these organisms. Genetic diagnosis can therefore identify the genes responsible for diseases or the cause of death.
At the conclusion of the festival, the university president, Professor Jumaa Salman Jiyad, honored a number of participating students with certificates of appreciation in recognition of their scientific achievements.
